Do you really need to write a business plan?


If you are actively balancing the role of mom and need a plan.  A place to write down all of your thoughts and goals for your business.  A refer point that you can use on a regular basis and measure your progress. 

I worked in the corporate world for most of my adult life.  I would have to update my business plan on a quarterly basis and I admit...I dreaded it.  I would put this task off for days if not weeks, waiting till the last moment possible to create my business plan. 

What I found each and every time was that a business plan is so incredibility helpful for success in business.  It's the process of looking at your current business situation, identifying your future goals and creating a plan to achieve them.

So, create a business plan that will help you grow your business and reach your goals.  It doesn't have to be formal or lengthy.  Keep it simple, it is a tool that will assist you to identify business challenges and opportunities.  Use these 5 simple steps to create an effective one page business plan.  

Here are your 5 Simple Steps for creating a One Page Business Plan:

The more thought you put into these questions, the more you will get out of this exercise.  Remember, a business plan is meant to help you.  

1.  Your Vision: A snap shot of your future business. 

  • How  you envision your business in 5 years? 
  • Where is you business going? The big picture.

2. Your Mission: The current state of your business. 

  • What does your company do and how do you do it?
  • Who are your target customers (be specific)?
  • What problem does your business or product solve for your target customer?
  • Who does your business or product solve that problem?
  • Why is your company unique from other companies (or competition)?
  • How do you want customers and other companies to perceive your company?
  • What role do you play in your industry or market?

3. Your Goals: Future business goals.

  • What do you want to achieve?
  • How will you measure goal achievements?

4. Strategies: Action needed to achieve goals.

  • What steps do you need to take to achieve your goals?
  • Tactics or tools that can be used to achieve your goals?

 5. Action Plan: Write it down.

  • With your goals in mind, plan out your next 30, 60 and 90 days.
  • Measure your results.
  • Make necessary adjustment as needed.
